The Substance of Nothing

Juan Miguel Palacios

The new works featured in this exhibition represent the characteristics of abstract painting, such as brushstrokes and paint splatters, which, when placed against backgrounds suggesting a concrete reality or landscape, acquire a tangible or figurative dimension.

Palacios’ colorful shapes float, spill, bounce, and dance across the canvas, never losing their sense of direction. These shifting forms evoke images of cosmic nebulae, deep-sea creatures, or microscopic organisms. The artist introduces shadows, giving life to these shapes, using simple techniques to layer them, creating a sense of infinity in both time and space.

The “landscapes” in Palacios’ works — though abstract — resemble the archetypal surfaces of planets, evoking memories of deserts, fields, and ocean depths.

Palacios’ exploration of “materiality” is ever-present, reflecting the contrasts and unity that permeate the universe. The exhibition is an attempt to question and rethink traditional perceptions of reality. Through the use and arrangement of abstract elements in physical space, Palacios gives them a metaphorical identity, sparking a visual conflict between abstraction and realism, and challenging the boundaries between the two.
